Background of the study

Community art projects have emerged as powerful tools for reinforcing local identity by engaging citizens in creative expression and cultural dialogue. In Abuja, these projects—ranging from public murals and performance art to collaborative exhibitions—serve as platforms for residents to reflect on their shared history and contemporary experiences. Through participatory art initiatives, community members actively contribute to the creation of cultural narratives that define and celebrate their local identity (Ibrahim, 2023). These projects foster social cohesion by bringing together diverse groups, sparking dialogue, and creating a sense of collective ownership over public spaces. Additionally, community art projects often stimulate local economies by attracting tourism and encouraging creative entrepreneurship. However, the sustainability of these initiatives depends on continuous community engagement, adequate funding, and supportive local policies. This study investigates the role of community art projects in strengthening local identity in Abuja, assessing how these creative endeavors contribute to cultural preservation and social unity while highlighting potential challenges that could undermine their impact (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite the recognized potential of community art projects to reinforce local identity in Abuja, many initiatives suffer from inconsistent support and funding, leading to sporadic and unsustainable outcomes. There is a noticeable gap in systematic evaluation regarding the long-term impact of these projects on community cohesion and cultural preservation. Challenges such as inadequate stakeholder collaboration, limited public participation, and competing cultural narratives further complicate the effectiveness of these initiatives (Okeke, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the impact of community art projects on strengthening local identity in Abuja.

To identify the challenges hindering the effectiveness of these projects.

To propose strategies for enhancing community engagement and project sustainability.
